Bengali and Hindi have approx. 200 million native speakers each. They are the largest linguistic communities on the Indian subcontinent. They are made up of two large groups:
In the North, Indo-European languages are spoken, including Hindi and Bengali, Marathi, Urdu, Gujarat and many others. In the South, Dravidian languages are spoken, such as Singhalese, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and a few others.
There are 14 official languages and 19 official scripts in India. English is the most important of them.
Indian scripts derive from Aramaic characters. They are second only to Latin scripts with respect to the number of offshoots and belong to one of the most productive linguistic cultures. |
