Chinese is the most spoken language on the face of the earth. It belongs to the Indo-Chinese family of languages and is divided into 8 dialect groups.
The new standard language Kuo-yue was developed from the traditional Northern Mandarin literary language Wen-li. Kuo-yue is the colloquial language and differs from the literary language.
Chinese script is a written language with about 50,000 symbols, of which anywhere between three and four thousand are normally used. Symbols with several meanings are differentiated by their pronunciation, creating the traditional "ring" of the language.
In 1956 the People's Republic of China implemented a writing reform, in which 500 simplified symbols partially replaced many very complicated symbols. In Taiwan, the traditional typography is still in use, as well as two different scripts, simplified and traditional. |
