| History of the Language |
|
English belongs to the Western Germanic group of the Indo European family of languages.
Old English (5th to 11th century):
The landing of the Angles and Friesians pushed the Celtic vernaculars back to the outskirts of the British Isles. Anglo-Saxon, strongly influenced by Danish, developed with Old English into a form which meets the criteria of an initial written language.
Middle English (1066 to 1500):
In the 11th century, when the landing of the Normans made French predominant at court and within the administration, English become the language of the common folk. Strongly influenced by French, English recaptured its place in schools, courtrooms and law offices in the 14th century. The predominant vernacular of the time was that of London.
New English (beginning circa 1500):
The Elizabethan age saw Shakespeare’s plays and the conquest of the seas dominated developments in literature and trade. English displaced French as the language of international trade.
