| HISTORY OF THE LANGUAGE |
Japanese is a completely autonomous language. Japanese vocabulary was strongly influenced by Chinese with the introduction of Chinese lettering by Korean Court Scribes in the 5th century. This is best illustrated by the left falling brush strokes of the vertical rows.
In the 9th century, Japanese was simplified into the syllabic script Kana. Syllabic writing established itself with Katakana script and especially through the newer form of Hiragana script (which both have 48 syllable characters). These characters were mixed integrated with Japanese block lettering, which uses mostly Chinese characters and increasingly Latin lettering.
Japanese as a literary language demonstrates a very sophisticated syntax and vocabulary, especially considering its numerous and sometimes very diverse vernaculars. The colloquial style is meticulously adjusted to the level of respect shown to the addressee or to third parties, as well as by using special forms of negation. |
