Spanish belongs to the Western Romanesque languages and developed from Vulgar Latin in use during the Roman occupation. Spanish displaced all Celtic and Iberian languages with the exception of Basque.
Catalan became the foremost literary language alongside vernaculars like Andalusian, Aragonese, Leonese, and others. Catalan is the predominant language in northeastern Spain.
In Latin America, Spanish has been influenced by the indigenous people. Grammar is almost identical, but the accents and slang differ greatly. Technical expressions are being anglicized; a computer in Spain is called an "ordenador" while in Argentina it is called a "computadora". |
