The new standard language Kuo-yue was developed from the traditional Northern Mandarin literary language Wen-li. Kuo-yue is the colloquial language and differs from the literary language.
Chinese script is a written language with about 50,000 symbols, of which anywhere between three and four thousand are normally used. Symbols with several meanings are differentiated by their pronunciation, creating the traditional "ring" of the language.
