Direction starts before the microphone

Well prepared.
Well directed.

A recording brings script, voice and technology together. Direction maintains the intended tone throughout the project.

Prepare the script

Review delivery, clarity and pronunciation; agree necessary adaptations.

Guide the voice

Develop context, tone, phrasing and pace with the voice artists.

Connect language versions

Respect linguistic and cultural differences while preserving the production’s effect.

A shared understanding

Your content.
The right tone.

Voice artists need to understand what they are saying and who they are addressing. The director explains background, situation and intended effect, then guides delivery during the recording.

For further language versions, we connect native-speaking text work with talent briefing, direction and sound production. Pronunciation, cultural references and permitted adaptations are agreed in advance.

Important briefing information

  • Audience and intended use
  • Script, translation and picture reference
  • Preferred delivery style and references
  • Product names, pronunciation and terminology
  • Voice roles, timing and script approval
  • Responsibility for changes and acceptance

Direction in detail

Understand. Listen.
Get the tone right.

Literature, factual content and film commentary call for different approaches. Preparation and direction follow your material.

Prepare for natural delivery and clear understanding

Before the studio session, the director assesses whether the script works when spoken and heard. A listener cannot simply reread a complex sentence: meaning and relationships need to be clear immediately.

Phrasing can be adapted by agreement. Changes remain traceable and are approved by the relevant contacts.

Literature and audiobooks: interpretation and approval

In literary texts, content, tone and style are part of the work. Text changes and abridgments are agreed with the author, translator and publisher; the director does not make unapproved changes independently.

Phrasing, breathing pauses, timbre and pace support interpretation. The director listens as the first audience and guides the voice artist with clear, constructive direction.

Factual texts: communicate information clearly

Factual material places accurate, accessible information first. Delivery should sustain interest, highlight essential details and suit the audience.

A neutral tone need not be monotonous. Dynamics, a pleasant voice and clear structure can also help with dense specialist content.

Documentaries and audio guides: information and emotion

Documentary commentary and audio guides combine information with interpretation. The appropriate degree of emotion follows content, audience and situation.

The director balances this effect and maintains a consistent tone across factual and narrative passages.

Explain the situation and brief the talent

A single “no” can sound relaxed, angry, doubtful or ironic. Voice artists therefore need clear context and a shared understanding of the intended effect.

Direction notes in the script help with style, attitude and pronunciation. Our guide provides terms for discussion; relevant audio references can complete the briefing.

In the studio: retakes, continuity and concentration

The director checks that tone fits content and remains clear on first hearing. Retakes, suitable pre-roll and consistent pickups support editing and further production.

Patience, clear instructions and concentration are part of the process. Required text changes are documented. The complete original essay, translated into English, provides a detailed insight into studio practice further down this page.

Other languages: effect and cultural references

For translated scripts, we consider wordplay, cultural background and audience expectations. Each language version should convey the intended content and effect clearly.

If an original recording already exists, a similar voice character may suit the new version. Spoken length and picture reference are coordinated across translation, direction and sound production.

Voice direction in the studio: the complete original essay

An essay by Klaus Kowatsch, translated into English. Time references relate to the original publication.

Once again the voice artist has stumbled over the “Seljuk sailing ships”. He is a seasoned professional, and this is not our first session together. But when things go wrong, patience is the only answer. I ask the sound engineer for five seconds of pre-roll so the speaker can hear the tone of the previous sentence and pick it up.

“But not so hard, not so forceful. Stay relaxed and pick up your own tone, otherwise it will be difficult to edit.” With all those s and sh sounds, I almost stumble myself. Once more: “Seljuk sailing ships”. There we go! No, this is typical: the hurdle is cleared, the speaker is pleased, his mind lingers on it for a fraction of a second, and he trips over the utterly ordinary word “arrive”. We are not safely in port yet.

It is almost funny. The previous three paragraphs went through without a break, but now... Well, laughter at least helps us relax, especially when we laugh together: for instance at my threat to wrap up the outtakes as a Christmas present for him.

“Same spot?” “Same spot, and... please!” That was it. Another stumble. It did not help. What now? The next trick: “Listen, do not make it unnecessarily difficult. Just say ‘the sailing ships of the Seljuks’.” “If you think so...” “Yes. With a pickup, and... please!” To the sound engineer: “Thank you for your patience. You know, sometimes it is these little things...”

Yes! Done! He sails through effortlessly and delivers the next sentence cleanly. I listen closely: does the tone convey the meaning, do listeners still feel personally addressed, is everything understandable on first hearing? Perfect. I note the change to the text and mark off the page. Relief.

.........

The work of voice direction does not begin only in the studio. Preparation includes assessing whether the text can be spoken and understood. The approach can vary considerably with the type of text:

For an audiobook, a recorded literary work, the words must be reproduced faithfully. Changes, including abridgments, must be agreed with the author, translator and publisher and cannot be made without approval. The director’s attention therefore rests mainly on interpretation. As the first critical listener, the director must judge whether the writer’s sentences convey their meaning clearly and their emotional quality immediately. If that does not happen at once, the director needs to know the expressive tools the performer can use: phrasing, breathing pauses, timbre, pace and so on. Offering collaborative advice and, at times, making demands, the director guides the voice artist toward the intended interpretation and an engaging literary listening experience.

The approach is somewhat different for an informative factual text. Here the emphasis is on communicating the content accurately and accessibly. Phrasing may need to be adapted to the needs of speaker and listener. While listening, we cannot scroll or turn back a page: information must become clear immediately and stay in memory as precisely as possible. Because feelings also influence how the brain stores information, an appropriately pleasant voice is an important means of conveying even the driest content.

In everyday studio practice, however, mixed forms are the most common, for example documentary commentary and audio guides. Information and interpretation are interwoven. With strongly emotional material, it can be a delicate balance to allow feeling into the voice without sounding sensationally sentimental or, at the other extreme, cynically cold.

Oh yes, another twenty pages of Seljuks... Fortunately it is only two now, but imagining that there are still many more has proved useful. That is at least what I like to tell speakers, so that anticipation of finishing does not make them lose tension and let their concentration sail away just before the end.

At the time of the original article, its author Klaus Kowatsch had worked in Berlin as a director for voice recordings for 25 years.

Preparation & studio

Translation meets direction.

The approved script is the foundation. In the studio, meaning, spoken length and intended effect also need to align. We therefore clarify the handover between translation, direction and sound production before recording.

The scope of translation, editing, direction and recording is agreed in the quote.

What we bring into the studio

  • An approved language version with a clear version identifier and named contacts for script changes.
  • Audience, intended attitude and context: what situation and intention should the voice convey?
  • Pictures, original recording, timecodes or duration limits where relevant to the production.
  • Agreed pronunciation of names, numbers, abbreviations and specialist terms.
  • Clarified wordplay and cultural references; for literary works, agreed approvals for adaptations.
  • A casting brief defining suitable vocal character and references rather than simply copying the sound of the original voice.

From briefing to acceptance

One agreed tone.
Across language versions.

One personal contact connects text, talent, direction and sound engineering.

  1. Understand the material

Agree audience, content, language versions, roles and intended effect.

  2. Clarify script & pronunciation

Review delivery, add notes and approve the production version.

  3. Direct the recording

Guide interpretation, pace, pronunciation and continuity during the session.

  4. Review & deliver

Coordinate sound production and the agreed final checks through to delivery.

Direction & audio rates

Matched to the recording.
Clear in the quote.

Text type, language versions, voice roles, timing and required direction determine the scope. We quote the agreed services at an individual fixed price.

The audio price list explains the included production scope. Specific direction or interpretation requirements are agreed before commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

A quick question.
A clear answer.

When is voice direction especially useful?

For complex content, literary material, multiple roles, a specific emotional interpretation or several language versions. We recommend a scope based on your source.

Can the director change the text?

Adaptations are agreed with you or the relevant rights holders and documented. The approved production version remains the shared working basis.

How should we describe the delivery style?

Describe audience, situation and intended effect, with reference recordings where available. Terms such as friendly, restrained or narrative help the discussion; pronunciation notes belong in the script.

Let’s talk about it

What tone should
your production strike?

Send us the script, language versions and intended effect. We will agree the voice, direction and production scope with you.
